MUSHROOM HUNTING

When Sister Cielenska went mushroom gathering
she invited us to come along as we had said it was something
we would be interested in doing.
So one morning we met her and Emilia
at her mother's home and made the
final preparations to gather mushrooms in the forest.
Align CenterFirst we had to put on mosquito repellant!!
Sister Cielenska's mother is a less active member of the
church and we have in the past enjoyed being with her.
This day she brought some yellow liquid and we all rubbed it
on. I didn't get some on my hands very well and
the mosquitoes knew exactly where it was missing.
Sister Cielenska and her mother telling the
qualities of the liquid which is
a vitamin B pill dissolved in water.
She said it was the best repellant she has used.
With map in hand from Sister Cielenska's
mother's husband we set out to find the right forest
It is best to get to the forest early (8:00 or before).
We were later than that but oh well.
Final preparations and instructions at the forest.
A mushroom book would be helpful for the novice
and
for the greatly experienced hunter.
Very soon after arriving to hunt Elder Moon found the
first mushrooms of the day!!
This one is not good. It has the ribbed or
ruffled underside.
I can't think of the right word for this type of
underside.
Anyway it isn't good.
This is a beautiful one in the forest growing by a
big tree. It also was not a good one.
Emilia found some delicious red berries and enjoyed
picking and eating them.
The underside of two "good" mushrooms.
However the big one was too big and old and
probably filled with bugs. When we cut it
open sure enough it was filled with bugs.
No good!!
Knives are used to cut them off because if the
root is still in the ground a new mushroom will grow.
Clumps of moss was growing all ove the ground.
Two beautiful red but NOT GOOD
mushrooms.
Sister Cielenska at one point read from the
mushroom book about one we had found.
This is not a good picture but can you see the
two tiny mushrooms I found. You can see the size
compared to my fingers.
Emilia even tried to pick one.
Today was NOT a successful say as far as the number
of mushrooms we found. We left this area to go to another
forest to see what we could find there.
At the next stop we found......
...ANT HILLS.
We decided not to stop here because they
experienced hunters saw the signs of not a good place to stop.
I wanted a picture of this anthill and Elder Moon went
to step out of the car to take a picture and the ground
on the other side of the car (where he was) was
COVERED with ants.
It is wonder the trees were still standing there
was so much movement from the billions of ants
moving around.
He didn't even get out of the car and we took
the picture from the window.
Sister Cielenska's mother wanted to visit a friend
near by so we stopped at a camping area.
Here are some of the cabins that people
stay in during their forest vacation.
We had fun for a while on a slide in the camp area.
Good day!!
...but not for mushrooms gathering!!
We did our study and attended the
Book of Mormon class when we got home!!
