MALBORK: A TEUTONIC KNIGHT CASTLE

We visited MALBORK CASTLE
which is south of Gdansk.
We met Elder and Sister Zatylny there
and had a wonderful day with them.
This castle was begun in the early 1200's
and was completed in 1406.
It is the world's largest brick Gothic castle.

The Castle is on the Nogat River and was built by the
TEUTONIC KNIGHTS
in Prussia as part of the Crusades.
It became part of Poland following WW II.

This is an interesting photo of the walls as it shows
the repaired areas.
Standing on the DRAW BRIDGE
at the main entry gate.
Notice Elder Moons "ears" as we had
ipods to hear the message of the castle.
The inner courtyard.

Draw Bridge.
These weights were counter balanced to open the bridge.
The courtyard.
The kitchen used to prepare food for the inhabitants
of the castle. WOW!
We could have used this for our family
but the modern conveniences were lacking!!
And the pans were a good size!
Tile work on one of the floors.

This was one end of a huge room lined on three sides
with bench seats for the Knights to meet.
Here the order of the group was decided upon.
We make great leaders together.
A hallway.

A picture showing the castle following WW II.
In 1945 this was one of the last strongholds of the
Polish army against the Germans.
About 50 % of the castle was destroyed.
It was re-built beginning in the 1960's and
parts are still in ruins.
Frescos in an entryway.
The remains of the largest cathedral here.
The Cathedral to Mary still in ruins.
This bed was probably not even long enough for me.
I like the style!
Cannon balls made of stone.
Beautiful stained glass window.

Wherever we are there are always things for sale.
Princess things for the girls
(although women did not live here)
and uniforms and weapons for the boys.
Elder Moon in a 'too small' helmet

Today it is a beautiful castle on a pretty river.
It could be a time to dream if you don't
remember the things that brought it here and
the history of wars.
